THE LONGEST HAIKU IN THE WORLD

The text we publish here below is a short poem, according to western standards, though it is very long in comparison to a standard Haiku.
It is a translation of “La domenica dell’ulivo”, written by the Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli in 1890.

OLIVE SUNDAY

They are today finished with their nests,
The birds (and it’s olive holy day),
By dead leaf, root, straw and twig:

That one on cypress, this one on bay,
In the wood, by a brook bubbling soft,
In the shadow that flickers in gold.

They brood among lichen and musk
Looking silent at the crystal sky
— With a sudden throb if they feel
a buzzing bee, a passing may-bug.
