The following poem by Uchiyama Kosho Roshi is based on a passage in the Shobogenzo Genjo Koan that goes:

“To practice the [Buddha]Way is to practice Jiko—all inclusive self.”

Poem:
If you call, I shall respond
That is just me responding to myself.

I can hear all the news of the world
I am just hearing news of myself.

When you are in pain or suffering
I lend a hand.

That is just me lending a hand to myself.

I follow my teacher and practice (as I am taught)
That is just me following me and practicing.

Whatever I bring up, there is nothing apart from Jiko—all inclusive self.

Practicing a Self that is a wholly living Self
That is the samadhi of fully-functioning Self
That is practicing the Buddha Way.

Praticare la via è praticare sé stessi, quel me che tutto comprende

Se chiami ti rispondo
Non è che me che risponde a me.

Posso ascoltare tutte le notizie del mondo
Sto solamente ricevendo notizie di me stesso.

Quando sei in pena o soffri
Tendo la mano.

Non è che me che tende la mano a me stesso.

Seguo il mio insegnante e pratico (come mi ha insegnato)
Non è altro che me che mi segue e pratica.

Di qualsiasi cosa si tratti, non vi è nulla separato da…. – quel “me” che tutto comprende.

Praticare sé stessi come tutta la vita vivente
Questo è l’attività del samadhi della vita tutta
Questa è la pratica della via di Budhha
